I’m really amping up how I’m going to use Wikis in my classrooms. I’ve been looking at different Wiki tools, and one that’s caught my eye the other day is “Google Sites.” Billed as a Website creator, it’s really a wiki, if you ask me. Reason= you can have many people editing it and can revert to previous versions (just like a wiki).
I love regular wikis (don’t get me wrong), but I think that they can be a bit text-book looking. Students will be engaged when asked to write, say, a textbook in wiki. But looking at the features of Google Sites seems to be more inviting. A class would see this as their ‘virtual spaces’ (where many wiki’s can be placed) and they are able to also put up their own web-type page.
I’m first setting one up for my own family and part of this is to model that I think a Google Site could give a “family feel” to a classroom’s site.

I think kids will like Google Sites over a traditional wiki because of the ease behind the gadgets they can add. Wiki pages become more interactive with the multimedia elements.
I look forward to learning about this new software from you. As always you have an amazing way of looking at these tools and use them in ways I would never think of. Can’t wait!
I think that using Google sites as a wiki is a great idea. I happen to be a fan of wikispaces, but that’s primarily because it was the first wiki I used. Keep us posted on how it works out for you.
Congratulations for finishing Alice’s adventure. And thanks for the bit by bit podcasts. I listen to them all!
I, too, like the concept of wikis – to a point. If it is for a class collaborative project, then I am all for it. I agree that it looks too plain, like a textbook in most cases. I just checked out Google Sites, and am liking that idea much better! Thanks for the tip! I bookmarked it with other resources I will be sifting through in the next year before I take on my own classroom. Keep on blogging!
I love how wikis can be so interactive. I agree that some wikis can look pretty boring though. Good luck with yours.
I envy your repertoire of resources and experience with this technology.
I just got The World Without Us. Have always had a problem with our stewardship, evidently Weisman has too.
Thank you for being so open with your sharing of your skills in class.
